 What is a Wool?

Wools are the names given to textiles that derive from animals. The most popular being from sheep (lambswool), rabbits (angora) and goats (cashmere, mohair).

Wools are naturally flame resistant and require no additional flame retardancy processes for domestic upholstery. It’s hard to ignite and tends to self-extinguish without melting. It can also absorb large quantities of moisture and is naturally repellant to moisture droplets.

For the more environmentally conscious of us, it’s a brilliantly sustainable source of textiles as it is rapidly renewable, biodegradable, recyclable and can be produced organically.

How is it produced?

Hair is harvested from the animal and begins a process of cleaning. Once cleaned, the hairs are spun into long strands which is then spun into yarns, which is then woven together to make the wool fabric.

How do you care for your wool?

It is important to understand how to care for the wool that you have in your home. The care required will depend on a few things so you need to know what your fabric is composed of – is it a wool mix or a 100% wool? Always make sure that you are aware of the cleaning instructions to make sure you are using the right methods. If well looked after, your wool can last you a lifetime.

Some new wools will have extra fibres that will come out naturally, this is part of the characteristic of a wool and not a fault. Gently vacuuming can speed up this process, although please check on an unseen piece before commencing. Regularly vacuuming your wool is important as tiny particles of dust and dirt can build up in your furniture which can be harmful over time.

Absorb any wet spills immediately. Depending on the care instructions of your wool a mild detergent may be used to gently wipe the wool along with a wet cloth. If this isn’t possible, then consult a cleaning expert. Do this as a matter of urgency since the longer a stain remains, the harder it will be to remove.
